A new fun way to travel to Machu Picchu, exploring the jungle of Cusco by bike, live with us this new adventure combining biking and trekking.
The first day we will have a 3 hour drive to the starting point, our team will pick you up from your hotel at 5:00 am. We will drive through the Sacred Valley passing by Urubamba and Ollantaytambo. We will have breakfast in the town of Ollantaytambo for 45 minutes and then drive through the valley of Patacancha, we can see on the way beautiful Andean Inca terraces used until today for the cultivation of corn, potatoes, beans and other products.
When we arrive to Patacancha, you will see the people dressed in their typical clothes, a combination of intense reds with greens and oranges that make a beautiful contrast to the view. You can take the opportunity to take pictures with the people because you will not see another opportunity like this, in another place.
After 1 hour we will arrive at the Yanamayo pass at 4300 meters above sea level, the temperature will be 10 to 15 degrees Celsius depending on the season, remember to wear a good jacket because of the cold. Our guide will give us a brief safety talk about the trail and the use of the bicycle. When we are ready, we will start descending through a road surrounded by mountains with vegetation typical of the Andean heights. As we lose altitude the ecosystem will change, from Andean highlands to jungle, we will observe fruit trees of bananas, oranges, coffee, cocoa. Our descent will culminate in the town of Ocobamba, where we will have lunch for 1 hour, rest our bodies and relax a little. The Explorinka team will load the bicycles to the car and we will drive to the village of Quillabamba, we will make some stops to learn a little about the agriculture of the area.
We will rest in Quillabamba.
On the second day, we will start at 8 in the morning having breakfast with a good coffee produced by the community of Quillabamaba (one of the best coffees in South America). After breakfast we will go by car for 45 minutes to a village at 1500 meters above sea level. In this place we will prepare our bicycles to descend by a road that crosses the Quillabambina jungle, adorned with fruit trees and crops of cassava, cocoa and coffee. Our guide will make some stops as we descend to taste some of the fruit and take a closer look at the coffee plantations and if it is in season, appreciate coca plantations.
We will arrive at Santa Teresa and have lunch in a hut for about 1 hour. Later we will continue descending to the thermal baths of Cocalmayo where we will relax our body with a good hot water bath next to the Vilcanota river. We will rest in the village of Santateresa.
On the third day of our adventure we will start at 8 am having breakfast in Santa Teresa. Around 10 o'clock our vehicle will take us to the hydroelectric plant (starting point of the hike to Aguas Calientes) we will drive for approximately 45 minutes bordering the mountain. Once at the hydroelectric plant, we will get ready to walk along a trail that lasts approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes until we reach the town of Aguas Calientes.
The trail is located near the railway line, surrounded by mountains next to the Vilcanota River. While walking you will be able to take pictures and visit the waterfalls of Mandor, a special place that you cannot miss. Finally we will arrive to Aguas Calientes, where we will have lunch and rest. We will have the afternoon free.
Our last day and the most awaited, we will visit Machu Picchu, our guide will transfer you to the bus station at 7am. The car will go up the mountain where you can appreciate a spectacular mountain scenery bordered by the great Vilcanota River. Arriving at the top we will check in and show our tickets to visit Machu Picchu. Depending on the circuit that has been purchased, we will have different places to visit the archaeological site.
While walking through its enigmatic streets, our guide will tell you a lot about the history of Machu Picchu, there will be moments to take many pictures and record our great adventure in this wonder of the world. After two hours of visit, we will return by bus to Aguas Calientes, we will have lunch while waiting for the arrival of our train. We will return to Cusco at 2:45 in the afternoon. Our vehicle will be waiting for you to transfer you to your hotel at the end of our tour.
